wick Drainage / vertical band drains in Swansea by Neal Remediation

The installation of vertical band drains (also known as wick drains) together with a preload (design load) or surcharge load (design load plus an excess load) accelerates the consolidation of soft compressible ground to allow construction work to commence without the concern of excessive future ground settlement.

The band drains are pushed vertically into the ground at close centres using our band drain rig. If the near surface soils are not granular then a drainage blanket is laid prior to the surcharge load (usually soil) being placed on top of the drains. The surcharge load compresses the ground and effectively squeezes the pore water that is trapped in the soil out towards the band drains, this in turn drains up to the surface. As the pore water drains (dissipates) the ground settles and also becomes more stable. Without the use of band drains settlement of the ground would potentially take decades to occur creating long term settlement issues for anything built on it.

We provide a full service from installation of band drains using our own rigs, drainage blankets surcharge load installation and monitoring and reporting of settlement.

As part of our service each band drain is logged with a GPS positioning system showing the OS or local grid coordinate, starting level of the band drain, the depth of the band drain and where necessary the push force required to install the drain. This information is passed to the design engineer to verify the installation and to further enhance their knowledge of the underlying ground.
